Vintage sakura

06 September 2016
For me the New Year starts in September, as I went to school. The summer is over and everything comes back to "normal" life. This summer I stayed away from this blog and social networks, but also from my sewing machine: I needed to get away, so I decided to take a break. I needed to stay outdoors for storing the sun rays for the winter and to stay with my family. With these premises it isn't a surprise that the shirt that I'm going to show you is one of only two garments I sewed in the past two months. But if I told you that it is a recycling, would you believe?

Everything started when my mom gave me this dress from 80's that she found in her closet during some spring cleaning, and she said me: "You may be able to alter it and wear it...". At first I thought to keep the dress as it was, only working on the fitting and shortening the length. But after washing, the bitter surprise: the fabric of the bodice was full of stains, impossible to wear. This made me very unhappy because the fabric is very light, perfect for the summer heat and I liked very much the fabric print. I already saw myself wearing those white sakura on red background ...Luckily I had a surprise: the skirt was in perfect condition and I realized that I had enough fabric to make a sleeveless top.
The idea of opting for Archer shirt of Grainline Studio (here I had already used this pattern to make this other long-sleeved button up) came to my mind only when I found on the blog Four Square Walls this tutorial to modify  the Archer classic neck in a V-neck.

I chose size M and incredibly the pattern stayed perfectly in the available fabric! But I had to make the yoke with fabric folds arranged horizontally and I didn't make the double yoke provided by the pattern.
As regards the instructions to modify neck and collar, Andrea's (Four Square Walls) tutorial is very well made and very easy to follow. For shoulders width, instead I followed the instructions of Grainline Studio's designer that suggests in this post to tighten the shoulders in order to make a sleeveless shirt.

For the fitting, the only alteration I made was to tighten the armholes about 4 cm. However this alteration puts me in doubt: should I choose a smaller size?I really love this pattern and it's a perfect start point to make alterations. And I'm happy because I recycled a dress. But I have to say a big "thank you" to my mother: not only for giving me this dress, but also because she gave me the idea to reuse the armhole bias and because she unpicked it for me - yes, she's so patient! Thank you, mom! :)

Tessuto: cotone 100%

Fabric: cotton 100%
Alterations: I made a sleeveless shirt, I modified the classic neck in a V-neck, and I tightened the armholes about 4 cm.
